Note: this class has been merged with Blogging Made Simple
(Currently, Skillshare doesn't let us delete posts, so I'm keeping this here for now.)
The new class is similar to that below, but simplified and done in one session. If you're interested, you can follow it here: http://www.skillshare.com/Blogging-Made-Simple/1352763403
(The former post is below)
This class if for bloggers—current and aspiring. I aim to help you break through some of the common hurdles to blogging: posting content and videos, SEO, free image resources, not getting sued, social media promotion, registering with search engines, etc. There will be three classes, each one-to-two hours long. We have a limit of 5 students per class to ensure I can help everyone individually.
The class schedule is as follows:
FIRST CLASS, Starting and Running a Blog: You don't need to hire a Web developer to start a high quality blog. I’ll teach you how to update and run your blog on your own. It’s a lot easier than most people will tell you.
SECOND CLASS, Content Promotion & SEO: We’ll go over the key areas of using social media to promote content, engaging the community, as well as what search engines look for, SEO (search engine optimization), and plugins to make this more effective.
THIRD CLASS, Avoiding Scams & Lawsuits: There are a lot of groups out there trying to scam bloggers. We’ll go over what these different tricks are and how to avoid them (Web developer costs, website hosting, black hat SEO, linking schemes, fake contributor mills, etc.) We’ll also go over some legal risks and how to steer clear of legal trouble (image citation, international and domestic libel, fair use of content, etc.)
What you'll need:
WORDPRESS TEMPLATES: I'm recommending all students pick and download a theme template before the class. Check out the two links below. If you already have a template you like, then great, we can start from there. Free Themes: http://wp.smashingmagazine.com/2011/07/05/free-wordpress-themes-2011-edition/ Paid Themes: http://themeforest.net/category/wordpress ).
WEBSITES AND SERVERS: You’ll need a server and website to get started. If you don’t already have these, then use one of the two options below. Go through Wordpress: http://wordpress.com/ and start one up! Go through GoDaddy: http://www.godaddy.com/ (Image courtesy of waelder (Own work), via Wikimedia Commons)
