Get to know your camera: DSLR basics

By ·Freelance Photographer + Startup Consultant

Lots of you are out there - you own a DSLR but don't actually know how to work the thing. That's fine and all, but you didn't pay all of that money just to shoot in "automatic" mode forever. By just getting to know a few basic camera terms, buttons and settings, you will unlock a wealth of photography know-how that will give you tons of control over the images you capture.

This class will cover:

  • Transitioning from "automatic" to "manual" mode.
  • Basic photography terminology: f-stop, ISO, shutter speed, white balance and more.
  • Different DSLR lenses and the images they produce, what you should buy and why.
  • In-class practice: playing around with settings to create dramatically different images.

Prerequisites:

  • You must own and bring a DSLR to class. How do you know if your camera is a DSLR? At the most basic level - 1) It's digital, and 2) you can remove and change the lenses.
  • That's it!

We'll begin at The Grove in SoMA, then walk to Yerba Buena park to practice shooting.

You'll walk away from this class knowing how to work your DSLR to get the images you want.  Hooray!
