Childbirth is a subject that touches the lives of every single human being on the planet, and yet, how childbirth is done, and why it is done in this way, are questions not usually asked by or answered for some of us. In this class we will be using an anthropological lens to explore how and why Americans practice birth in the way that we do. Historical and cross-cultural examples, as well as data about birth gathered from the four subfields of anthropology, will be used for comparison and discussion. By the end of the class you should gain new insight into the American practice of birth and form your own decisions about the practice of childbirth in your life.
