Map lovers, travelers, hosts, neighborhood enthusiasts & people who like to know where they’re going or where they’ve been, this class is for you.
Whether you host friends in your home on a regular basis, are planning a party or event where you need a map, you have a zest for travel, or just plain love your neighborhood and want to map it, this class is designed to get your creative juices flowing and to map out some of your favorite places into a visual guide.
What You'll Learn
Note: This is not a technical or professional cartography class, but rather focuses on seeing the world creatively through mapping.
What You'll Make
Map your own neighborhood or memories from your latest travel adventure – you choose the focus of your travel/map and your classmates will help inspire you. The finished projects may be themed guides around a favorite topic, chart your favorite places, or to show visitors what they need to know when they visit you. You'll cover possible formats, styles and methods for you to present your final work as well. In this class you’ll be given the tools to help your mind travel.
The lectures cover analog, phyiscal maps and basic concepting. In addition we cover digital and online mapping systems, and the ways you can integrate your final projects. Students are encouraged to share their work and comment on that of their classmates to help push each other’s projects forward.
Over 1,000 students from more than 35 countries around the world covering all 5 continents have taken part in this class. Come join the fun!
From time to time I'll feature some of my favorite projects on Prêt à Voyager (this does not necessarily mean best designed; creativity and expression will also be taken into consideration. Think: BE MEMORABLE). People often come to me looking for help with maps, so you may even get work passed your way from taking this class.
I'm an American designer / editor / consultant based in Paris, France that likes to connect creatives across continents. I have spent 8+ years working as an in-house and freelance graphic designer. I teach Map Making, Intro to InDesign and Designing Professional Documents on Skillshare.
I founded Prêt à Voyager in 2007 to explore the intersection of travel and design. I'm also co-founder / editorial director of Studio/Practice and give custom tours of Paris through Vayable. My writing has been published in Dwell, Fast Co. Design, Anthology, EasyJet Traveller and Kinfolk, and I've worked as a long-time contributor for Design*Sponge.
Classes revolve around completing a project and collaborating with fellow students to give and get feedback on your work. Use Video Lessons and the Project Guide designed by your teacher to complete your class project.
Teachers design and present all class content, but Skillshare is community based around student-to-student interaction. You'll be surprised at what you learn from your classmates!
Never! Once enrolled, you have lifetime access to class materials. That means you can learn when and where you want. Learn at your own pace.
