What You’ll Learn

Do the words Apache, cache, SQL, schema, JavaScript, AJAX & API's intimidate you? If you want a better grasp on how a website gets built, and/or if you simply want to learn how to communicate better with your technical team and friends, then this class is for you!

We will cover things like:

  • How servers work
  • How the Internet and WWW work
  • The difference between "client-side" and "server-side", and "front-end" and "back-end"
  • The parts of a website
  • All the crazy acronyms you need to know: API, AJAX, HTTP, SQL, DRY

...and more, depending on what questions you have! The class will be followed by a Q&A segment, and I will hang around for a while afterwards for any one-on-one questions you may have.

This class will help you speak to your techie friends, your web/software development team, and any outside contractors you might encounter. Believe me: web companies love it when their clients know what they're talking about!

About Your Teacher
Delwin Campbell · Web developer & Electronic musician
  • I am a freelance web developer in Austin. I've worked on everything from small business websites to blogs to ecommerce sites to social networks.
  • I regularly work on a few of my own websites, including delw.in, my personal site, and AbletonOp, a blog and store that provides resources to Ableton Live producers.
  • I am contracted often as a front-end developer, which means I'm working a lot in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (+jQuery).
  • I know PHP and Python as well, using WordPress, Django, web.py, and CakePHP. Next on the list is Ruby + Rails.
  • Right now I'm working on some really cool stuff — an iPad app for restaurant managers, a website to gauge employee satisfaction efficiently and anonymously, and an interactive online music school.
  • I work with a freelance designer named Nikki at No Enemies, and I'm frequently subcontracted by Monkee-Boy Studios, one of Austin's top web design agencies.
