Streetball Appreciation 101

New York City is the mecca of street basketball. From The Cage at West 4th to Rucker Park at West 155th, the blacktop breathes life into the heart of the concrete jungle every day.

Streetball Appreciation 101 will take you on a journey through the evolution of streetball over the past century. The class will explore the genesis of the Harlem Renaissance & the rise of amateur leagues. How streetball nuance made its way to the NBA through the acrobatic dunks of Dr. J, no-look passes of Pistol Pete, & deadly crossovers of The Answer. How streetball legends like Skip 2 My Lou & Hot Sauce emerged through the proliferation of AND1 Mixtapes & into mainstream media. How crews such as YPA, Notic, & DIME55 have expanded streetball beyond its birthplace of NYC to a worldwide movement.

Students will walk away with an understanding of streetball culture & its impact on modern culture & basketball . . . in addition to being a baller.
