What You’ll Learn

Take a break from the digital world—let's talk about literature. From satire to memoir to literary fiction, books are one of the most underrated forms of art. Join me as we revisit some of the most treasured masters of the written word.

I'll choose a different exemplary author per session. I'll bring excerpts of the writer's work, and we'll read his or her pieces, find out about the writer's background, and discuss our impressions of the text. What does he or she do well? Where does he or she fall short? What does the work reveal about the climate in which the author wrote these pieces?

No need to be an English major. I'll review what to look for when analyzing a literary work, and we'll go from there.

This will be a welcoming and engaging environment where we'll (re)learn how to read and comprehend a text. The content will change from session to session, so feel free to sign up for multiple classes.

May 5: Dorothy Parker

Dorothy Parker (1893 – 1967) was an American poet, short story writer, and satirist, best known for her wit and her eye for 20th century urban foibles.

May 19: Joan Didion

Joan Didion (1934 - present) is an American author best known for her novels, literary journalism, and memoirs. Her novels and essays explore cultural chaos in America.
