Social Media 101 - A class for beginners (don't be a Weiner)

Beginner LevelWorkshop, Lecture

About this Class

Okay, the Weiner meme is very old now. However, the concept still applies and folks are still making some bad social web errors. Therefore,  I'm keeping it.

Social media fails are bad and, by default,  are public.

This course will cover the basics of the social web and give you a primer on doing it correctly. You'll learn about the big 4 social media sites: Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube. G+ isn't a big four site, yet, but I'll touch on it and other sites like Pinterest. You'll learn the best ways to navigate these sites. You'll also learn what to watch out for regarding security and privacy.

The goal is for everyone to create a Twitter account. (If it's not completed during our 90 minute class, you've got 48 hours to send me a link.) I'll go over following and sending tweets. We'll cover retweets and direct messages. You'll leave knowing what those terms mean. The price includes handouts.

I want to stress that this class is for people who haven't taken the plunge into the social web and want to know the basics of the social media landscape before diving in.

What's required? Please bring a laptop or tablet (iPad or Android tablet) and be ready to learn. This class is a beginner level course. If you're already doing your thing on social media sites, this is probably going to be boring for you.

You can also find the class listed here on the pariSoma San Francisco website: Social Media for Beginners.

Prerequisites

The only prerequisite is curiousity and a desire to learn. Because the course is partly a workshop, you should bring your own laptop or tablet (iPad or Android).

Regina’s Credentials

I'm a freelance social media consultant. I started off as a blogger when I lived abroad in Seoul, South Korea and realized that to get people to my blog, I had to master the social web. That got me a newspaper column with a press pass and led to many freelance writing assignments. It also led to me joining a few team blogs.

When I moved back to the States in 2009, I realized there was a market for people with my skills. That's how I became a freelancer. I've also taught computer courses to seniors in NYC.
