Love the look of letterpress printing and want to dig in for yourself? Unfortunately, we all don't have the space for a 1500lb letterpress, limiting our access to this beautiful craft. Come to my studio in Oakland and spend the afternoon learning about how to set lead type and the magic of letterpress printing. If you have a special paper you'd like to print on, bring it, otherwise I will provide a rainbow of ink, 100% cotton paper, a variety of lead fonts and all the tools that you will soon know what to do with.
Each student will learn how to set type, how the press operates, and set up a short phrase or a few images to their liking. We'll then take turns printing 20 copies. You will be given the opportunity to set your own piece within certain length and size parameters- so think of a project!
NOTE: This class takes places in Oakland.
I have been letterpress printing since 2003. During undergrad years I ran the Bow & Arrow Letterpress in Cambridge. Since then I have worked for Soolip Paperie and Paper Company and moved on to start my own letterpress company in Oakland. Now operating as The Communication Company, I take on custom design and print projects as well as produce a line of wholesale cards.
