To the uninitiated, Night Photography might be frightening: technical limitations, weird locations, and -- worst of all -- no or very little light. Well, fear no more! With some basic equipment and knowledge, you can learn how to take beautiful night photographs which stand out from the crowd.

These two sessions, with a shooting exercise in between, will serve as an introductory guide to the world of long exposures, low light shooting situations, and long nights with only you and a camera by your side.

What you'll learn

  • The basic equipment needed to take long exposures at night
  • Different styles and approaches to night photography and light painting
  • Techniques to getting properly exposed images using only moonlight
  • A handful of post-processing tips and tricks

Between sessions there is a full moon and you'll be given an assignment to shoot and work on some of your new skills. While not required, the group may want to head out together on the same night. In our second session we'll review our photos and discuss challenges and processing basics.

Prerequisites
This class is primarily focused on shooting at night with a Digital SLR. While we will touch on shooting with film briefly, it is recommended to shoot with a DSLR for this course. For shooting in between sessions, a tripod is strongly recommended, as is cable release to operate your camera in "Bulb" mode. We'll cover equipment basics in the first session. Students should understand basic operation of their camera including setting ISO, aperture and shutter speed manually.
