Making Public Your Practice: Art & Community Organizing

Brief Description: Artists do well in bad economies. We're used to having no money, accustomed to coming up with creative solutions, and are generally less dependent on a broken status quo. How can we use the skills and resources we have to boost both our own practices and our community functionality? This workshop asks you to look outside the standard toolkit to brainstorm real solutions for boosting creative practice, increasing the visibility and value of the arts, and maintaining sustainability in our everyday lives.

Class Format: Chloë will give a brief presentation on her community organizing work with Arts in Bushwick, as well as sharing a few of her public art projects, both successful and not. Then the class will divide into groups to share other projects, discuss their communities (and what "the community" even means), and brainstorm organizing ideas. Finally, we'll come back together to share what each group has come up with and put together a list of next steps for real progress.
