Ever notice how a really good song feels universal but yet intimate at the same time?
In this class we'll go throguh the process of songwriting with an emphasis on lyrics. We'll start by deconstructing the pop formula, explore some of the more common roadblocks to successful songwriting, and discuss techniques that can be easily employed to overcome them.
You will be given all of the tools needed for good lyric writing, and an optional follow up assignment that I will gladly review and comment on once you've completed it. This class is a must for anyone who gets writers' block, feels embarrassed about their lyrics, or just wishes that they could better express themselves through poetry.
This class is taught by Mike Flannery, winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, the Independent Music Awards, the International Songwriting Contest, ALA Award, NAPPA, and Parents Choice Award among others.
All that is required is a genuine desire to write lyrics or poetry.
Mike Flannery is a music composer, producer, engineer, and children’s recording artist in New York City. Whether composing custom music for a national TV campaign or overseeing pre-production with an aspiring singer-songwriter, he brings his unique blend of passion, dedication and skill to the process of music creation.
Mike was classically trained at an early age and later forged his rock aesthetic in the furnace of the NJ underground scene in the 90′s. After making his major label debut as a producer on the pop charts in the early 2000′s and touring alongside global acts such as Outkast, My Morning Jacket, LL Cool J and Ludacris, Mike launched a successful studio in Maine, where he would go on to perfect his engineering and mixing skills for the next seven years.
Recognizing a need in the advertising space for original composition, Mike then extended his musical jurisdiction into the brand world, generating custom music for a number of high-profile national campaigns. Creating music of any genre to the specifications of the client is Mike’s expertise, and his musical range is wide-reaching. At the top of 2012, Mike returned to his New York roots, opening a new studio just east of the High Line in Chelsea that is now available for booking. He continues to compose for brands, and is also available for speaking engagements.
