In this course, designed for beginners, you will learn the basics of hand typesetting and the contemporary practice of letterpress printing. Students will learn the basics of operating a Vandercook proof press, and having completed the class will be eligible to continue on independently in our fully-equipped midtown Manhattan printshop. We will cover the essentials of good presswork including inking, imposition, and impression and move on to discuss typefaces, paper, incorporating illustrations and adding color. You will develop your own small projects such as broadsides or cards. Bring words and ideas to class and be ready to roll up your sleeves.
This class is suitable for beginners, and is taught this summer as a five day, weeklong intensive, Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4pm. Bring pencil and paper to take notes and wear something you don't mind getting dirty.
