Design and knit your own cowl

In this class, I’ll teach you basic knitting techniques. You’ll leave this class with a hand-knit, ready-to-wear, cowl of your own creation - the perfect project for knitting beginners.

I got my start in DIY by transforming an old sewing magazine into the DIY fashion community BurdaStyle.com. With over 800,000 members participating, I saw firsthand how valuable it is to DIY alongside other passionate enthusiasts from all over the world. I went on to start Kollabora, a crafter and maker community, on a simple, exciting idea: we are what we make.

Makers on Kollabora.com share projects, instructions, techniques, supplies and tools they’ve used to create, and ask and answer questions. You can browse and discover original, fashion- and design-forward projects, currently in sewing, knitting, and jewelry making.

Since, my work has appeared in The New York Times, Wired, BusinessWeek, Women's Wear Daily, and Fast Company. And I’m thrilled to report I was just elected to the board of the Craft and Hobby Association.

You’ll knit your own cowl - an fun beginner’s project that teaches you the techniques you’ll need to move on to ever more complex and beautiful creations.

You’ll collect and share images of upcoming trends to inspire your design and I’ll guide you through the techniques of casting on, knitting, purling and casting off as your create your cowl.

Yarn: 2 skeins Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (a super bulky member of the Wool Ease family of Lion Brand Yarn) 80% acrylic/20% wool. Super Bulky #6
Needles (circular): US 15 (10 mm) (you will also be fine with a 17 or 12, but then you have to measure)
Notions: Tapestry Needle

Prerequisites

This class is for anyone interested in learning how to knit. No previous knitting experience required - just the desire to learn! You’ll be moving on to more complex projects in no time.
