About this Class
There’s something uniquely satisfying about making cool art from what might have been trash, and cardboard food packaging, like cereal and cracker boxes, can be upcycled into perfect book covers. (See examples here.) In this class, I’ll teach you bookbinding basics (focusing on the pamphlet stitch and its variations, including double-signature pamphlets and dos-a-dos), using miniature cereal boxes as book covers for that extra-kitschy ‘oomph’ factor! They may not be archival, but they’re tons of fun, and when you pull one out of your bag, someone will doubtless ask, “Where’d you get that?” (And then you can puff up your chest and say, “I made it!”)
Use your miniature cereal box books as address books, tiny sketchbooks, party favors, repositories for stories about faraway lands where cereal grows on trees...the sky’s the limit.
No experience is necessary - this class is designed to teach beginning bookmakers basic skills, but feel free to join us if you’ve got some experience already! All materials (including tiny cereal boxes – and cereal! No milk, though) will be provided – just bring yourself and your enthusiasm.
You’ll leave with a handful of cereal box books in different formats, knowledge of simple bookbinding techniques, and the inspiration to make cute little books out of all sorts of stuff that might otherwise have been destined for the recycling bin!
Please note: this class is intended for adults (though I can offer tips on how to teach this stuff to kids if you're interested).
