What You’ll Learn

Why mobile photography?

Mobile photography is an emerging and powerful medium. Services like Instagram have made it possible for those with little or no photography background to quickly improve their skills and engage with a vast network of like-minded artists, and to have their work seen by a large and enthusiastic audience.

This hands-on class will encourage and empower you to improve your photographical skills by using the camera sitting right in your pocket.

What you'll learn

The basic elements that make a great photograph are the same whether you're using a $4,000 DSLR or a $200 cell phone. You'll uncover many of those elements and put them into practice during this class, where we'll cover topics like:

Lighting
Composition
Subject
Editing
Finding your own photographical style

What you'll do

After covering the elements above, we'll head out for a photowalk in the City where you can apply some of the techniques from class.

How to prepare

Students should prepare by browsing the photographs of mobile photographers they admire on Instagram or other networks. Ask yourself why specifically you like a particular image? What makes a photo appealing to you, or what do you not like about a photo?

Intermediate Level

Students should have experience shooting and editing photos with an Android or iPhone device.

Chris Ozer · Photographer

Chris has been an active member of the mobile photography community since he began shooting and publishing photos with his iPhone in 2008. He is currently featured as a Suggested User on Instagram, where he has garnered over 100,000 followers. He was recently invited to tour Catalonia, Spain as one of only 10 Instagramers to document the region via Instagram. His work has been featured on the Visual Supply Company website, and he has been hired for professional work through his Instagram feed.
