Good editorial design is all about taking care of your readers. I'd love to share with you what I learned working in the print magazine world about visual hierarchy, points of entry, reader attention, etc. -- but also how these same principles apply when designing publications for the web, whether they be blogs, digital magazines, etc. I'll walk through examples of decisions I made when designing Pictory and maybe even pull some old JPG Magazine spreads from the archives. Maybe you'll even get a sneak peek at some of the freelance publication design I've been doing recently.

From there, we'll turn things over to you. Students should bring the ingredients for an article: text, photos, and some way of combining them (such as design software like InDesign or Photoshop, or any blog platform like Tumblr or Wordpress, etc.). We'll go back over the basics and then workshop your ingredients into an effective article.

Several of the topics mentioned here will be discussed: http://blog.typekit.com/2011/08/03/type-study-is-anyone-paying-attention/

Prerequisites
This class would be best for people who are really comfortable with their computer and who love the internet. Basic design skills are a bonus but not necessary.
