Create a personalized statement necklace using chain, thread and sliced agate

Ever wander through your favorite boutique and wonder how jewelry designers make all those killer statement necklaces? With this class, you can save a few hundred dollars and get the satisfaction of saying you made it yourself.

We founded For the Makers to make DIY-ing fashion-forward accessories accesible to anyone and we're using our experience working with Kate Spade, Anthropologie and Marc Jacobs to do just that.

This class will be loved by both the absolute jewelry beginner and anyone who has dabbled in jewelry but wants to up their game a bit.

What You'll Learn

We’ll start with jewelry basics including...

How to use jewelry pliers and shop for the perfect materials.
How to find inspiration
The design process we use when designing for major brands.

You’ll learn how to work with chain, cord, and stones to design and make a custom necklace.

The Project

When you leave this class you’ll have a statement necklace and tips on how to use what you learned to make endless necklace and bracelet styles.

You'll look through the resources provided to determine which necklace silhouette you'd like to make and you'll create the basic layout and measure and cut your chain. Using our wrapping, technique you'll connect the layers of chain and attach the agate and the clasp. We’ll show you ways to personalize your necklace with additional materials and possible style and color variations to build on the skills you learned.

Materials & Supplies

This class is FREE to join and you'll be able to buy a pre-packaged box of lovingly sourced supplies from For the Makers for $29. The only other tools you'll need are:

a pair of flat nose pliers
jewelry clippers
scissors
super glue
permanent marker or white out

Project Award

Our favorite five projects will be featured on our blog and we'll include an interview of the creator of our absolute favorite.

Prerequisites

We’ll cover everything you need to get designing and complete your first necklace. If you already have a basic understanding of jewelry-making we’ll show you ways to add a few things to your design repertoire. Students are encouraged to order a kit that includes all the materials needed to complete a statement necklace. This will make your shopping a breeze and leave you the time to make something rad.
