This intensive, beginning workshop is designed to enable artists to use the book format in their work as a means of expanding, preserving, and restructuring ideas. Students will make four to five books from scratch, including an accordion book, a long-stitch book, a tacket binding, and variations on the pamphlet binding, as well as a simple box (or two). The properties of bookbinding materials will be discussed in detail.
Materials will be provided for all projects, but you may want to bring decorative materials or other materials to personalize your projects. Students will leave the class with several finished books, and many ideas for future projects. Techniques are taught with the needs of the artist in mind, and can be replicated in your own studio without specialized bookbinding equipment at hand. At registration, students will be provided with a short list of hand tools for bookbinding that they should bring to class. This class is taught as a weeklong intensive during the day, Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4pm.
