A hands on introduction to Coptic (exposed spine) sewing. Students will sew their own 5 x 6" journal. All materials will be provided. This is a non-adhesive binding, so no glue this time around. This class is a must for any aspiring craft binder. The coptic binding structure is very popular for art books or decorative binding. Students will receive a hand out with step by step instructions as a reminder for later work. When you are done with this class you should feel confident preparing and sewing your own journals at home!
This class focuses on sewing. Needles will be present, children are not advised to take this class.
I have been a professional binder for over 10 years. Books, glue and paper are my passion. Beginning this year, I founded my own book binding business. I was apprenticed to a master binder in 2001, and continued my journeyman training at Cypress Fine Albums for five years. My goal is to hone my craft every day.
I have taught workshops for the AIGA at UCLA, USC and CalArts.
I am a member of the Guild of Bookworkers, The Hand Binders of California and The Miniature Book Society.
