This class will introduce the newbie artist to exploring creativity through collages. The beauty of collage is that no drawing skills are needed. Students must be willing to experiment with color scraps and their imagination. Images from magazines will be used, and their colors and textures will be emphasized. Students will create an original narrative image in their collage. The fantasy world will come to life before their eyes in their art.
With regards to traditional foundational art techniques: We will explore how darker colors
make two-dimensional objects recede in to the background and how lighter colors bring objects forward. If students can handle the assignment, we will learn how to "blend colors" through the use of collage to make things appear to have a foreground and background.
Using colorful scraps of paper can be challenging for the beginner, but they're plenty of fun. Depending on the variety of magazine image scraps students bring, we can explore abstract art ideas as a form of visual storytelling.
Students will be given a limited amount of time to cut out scraps, and art games will also be played to spice up the lesson.
