BUILD: Your Lean MVP with Ruby on Rails

Students 10/10

About this Class

1st class in the BUILD! series. Future classes in December TBD

You have an idea that will change the world. Since you are a smart person, you’ve talked to potential customers and proven demand. Now what?

Do you waste the next few months hunting the mythical technical co-founder? Spend thousands on offshore developers? How is that lean?

You have one goal and one goal only: Get a minimally functional version in front of your customers ASAP!

This class will help you get started doing just that. Using the modern web development framework Ruby on Rails, we will teach you everything you need to get started building your MVP from scratch. We will work through getting a simple blog webapp up and running. If there is interest there will be additional classes TBD.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Signup for a free hosting account on Heroku.
  • Run through the Rails for Zombies tutorial prior to the class.
  • Bring a modern working laptop
NOTE:No technical knowledge is expected above and beyond basic computer proficiency. It will be much easier to get started if you use Mac or Linux. If you have a Windows machine, please download and install the dead-simple RailsInstaller.

Dan’s Credentials

I am a full time developer and CTO for my current startups LocalVibe and FreshTomatoes. Before that I was the backend developer for my last startup, TrustMob.

Before I was an entrepreneur I spent 2+ years learning front and back end web development with Ruby/Rails the hard way. Prior to that I worked as a SysAdmin and help desk technician for 5+ years patiently explaining complex technological concepts to people with little to no technical understanding (i.e. suits).

I remember vividly what it was like to feel overwhelmed by the task of learning to program. I would blindly copy examples from programming books, hoping that it would all start to make sense at some point. After I became a l337 h4x0r*, I knew I had to reach back and help others learn learn, hopefully with 10% of the time, energy, and frustration.

*(nerd for "leet (i.e. elite) hacker")
